- Following the death of Josef Giering, the spouse was subsequently remarried. Later she became the widow of Nikolaus Philipp Kleer
- Josef changed his name on June 10, 1929 in Essen, Germany
- Son Erich was adopted.
- (Author's Note): Josef Giering is to be commended. The adopted son, Erich, was born out of wedlock prior to Josef's marriage to Anna. Erich's Birth father was one Dr. Berkenburg with whom Anna Kretz had an affair while she was in Dr. Berkenburg's employ at the then Gelsenkirchen Newspaper (Now the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung). Josef, upon being married to Anna, adopted Erich and raised him as his own son.
